Dear Mr. Cervasio:
Thank you for writing your excellent book,
Good News on the Doorstep. It was an amazing experience for me to actually read about the historic "Mud Bowl" between the Belleville and Nutley high school football teams - - an event that my Dad retold often to me with tears in his eyes. My name is Edward F. Szep, son of Edward J. Szep, who played in that unforgettable game in 1957 with his teammates D'Angelo, Barra, Bartel, and the other gridirons. My Dad will turn 70 this November 6th. Would you know how I might obtain a DVD copy of the "Mud Bowl"? I cannot imagine a more perfect gift for my Dad. Please feel free to e-mail me
or call my cell.phone. Thank you for any guidance you may provide me, and have a happy and safe Halloween weekend.
Ed
PS: Ed later wrote back his correction of the title, Bad News on the Doorstep , not ... Good News. We told him Mr. Cervasio could care less for the confusion with our blog site title, ... "It's all Good News," said Joe.
WE GET INTO THE ENDZONE ON THIS ONE!! READ BELOW...
Dear Mr. Cervasio:
The "Mud Bowl" DVD was a touchdown! The very first play captured by the DVD shows Belleville player No. 17 (my Dad, Edward J. Szep) making a crushing tackle. Our entire family - - Dad, Mom, 4 sons (including me), 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren, 4 sons/daughters-in-law and 1 fiance - - huddled excitedly around the tv, roared in celebration. Thank you for helping me track down a copy of the "Mud Bowl" DVD, and bringing such joy to my family. And thank you also for bringing me in contact with Daniel Geltrude and his Mom, who were so extremely generous in giving me a copy of the "Mud Bowl" DVD - - they bring honor to the memory of Michael Geltrude.
I gave my Dad, Dan and Judy your best wishes.
I will make a copy of the DVD for you.
Thank you again. With great appreciation, I remain,
Very truly yours,
--Ed Szep
AND THEN THE EXTRA POINT FROM DR. MICHAEL KORMANICKI:
The legacy of "Bad News" is made manifest in the letter of thanks from Ed Szep. It preserves a memory that will continue to touch the hearts of families--generations of them (as Ed's letter notes)--and keeps the alive a moment of time that will inspire and challenge generations to come...
Thank you for sharing this with me.
From Tallahassee,
Mike
