Chapter I “Yesterday is a Long Time Ago”

Joseph awoke to the scent of lilacs wafting through the restless drapes separating him from the world outside. As he sat up, the subtle bouquet reminded him of a life now only a misty memory.

The early spring warmth blanketing Jerusalem felt like a balm, but his wounds went too deep for such easy healing. Getting to his feet, the pain in his lower back deepened. He was an old man, getting older.

There was a time, not so many years before, when the roles of Duca and Joseph were reversed. Then it was Duca who was in dire need of assistance, and Joseph was there to lead the rescue mission.
