It was once a recession-proof business. Now vacation time-sharing licks its wounds after the financial markets froze up last fall, bringing some of their business models into question. "Oh-oh, what do we do with this paper now? Yea, we can finance some of our new clients, but that hasn't been our business. Can we get help? Everybody needs a car, good for Detroit. But our history shows everyone needs a vacation, too, even in these times!! Can the government help us as well?"

It is what it is: a jittery economy reacting to a financial mess. The only consolation is that perhaps our generation will develop the kind of character that was cultivated out of our parents when they went through The Great Depression. They became known as "The Greatest Generation."

On the other hand, there have been moments when we were ready to challenge Jack's title as grand wizard of corporate strategists--moments when some of us felt that what may have been perfect for his times might not win him the MVP today.

In my professional work around the country, there is one question I am always asked.
Are leaders born or made?
I have concluded that the answer is ... NEITHER!

Unbelievable.
The business world has its own equivalent of the Academy Awards, put on every year by the American Business Awards. Theirs are called "Oscars" (no one knows quite why). Ours are called "Stevies" (the Greek word for "crowned")
This past Monday night, June 12, Joe's company Bluegreen Corporation was crowned as "Best Overall Company" (in the over 2500 employees category) for the preceding year.
